We were telling you about the first steps taken by the Foundation as part of the Covid 19 which began to hit Ethiopia 1 month ago. In addition to the health crisis, there is also an agricultural crisis with the locust invasion which is causing considerable damage to the country's crops. This complex and highly problematic situation has led to a high risk of famine throughout the country, particularly in remote areas such as Sona.
On April 14, at the suggestion of its country representative Mihret Mitiku, the Board of the Foundation decided to release an emergency budget to provide a food aid to the poorest families in Sona. After consultation with local authorities, 75 families were identified as being in critical need.
As the rainy season (May to September) approaches, it has been decided to provide these 75 families with the following foodstuffs
- 100 kg of Sorgo
- 3 litres of oil
- 1 kg of salt
That is a total of 7.5 tons of Sorgo, 225 liters of oil and 75 kg of salt. The budget mobilized for this operation is 193.800 Birr (5.500 €) all inclusive, including transportation.
The operation, which was exceptional in the region, was covered by 3 journalists sent by their respective editorial offices. Representatives of the Simien National Park and local authorities were also present to support the operation. The success of this first delivery is a great satisfaction. It is also an additional cost to the Foundation's budget. Although it is relatively modest, it is our duty to anticipate the need to renew this food aid during the rainy season. For this reason, we are asking our faithful supporters for a exceptional assistance to address the current crisis in Ethiopia.
