The Children in the Cloud Foundation offers you the opportunity to sponsor a child from Sona in Ethiopia. Indeed, we are building a school that offers quality education until the age of 14, i.e. Grade 8. However, many students would have the capacity to continue their studies! But due to lack of funds, their families cannot send them to high school in town, as the accommodation costs are too high for them. An insurmountable effort for the vast majority of Sona families...
A scholarship for children in Sona
We are working on the implementation, for the beginning of the school year in September 2021, of a scholarship system to allow students who are able and willing to continue their studies. The Sona school is now nearing completion and we can focus on this objective, which has been part of the Foundation's action plan from the outset. An educational challenge in more ways than one!
The logistical challenge
From Sona, several high schools are accessible but all of them are too far for a day trip. Adi Akai, Janamora or Debark are (relatively) close to Sona. But the closest one is Chirolaba, The students will have to go there for a week, or even a month, and stay in guesthouses. They will return to their families from time to time. We are currently defining the conditions of their reception, accommodation and food. Simple but good quality conditions to allow them to study in good conditions and to develop physically and psychologically. Most of the journeys are made on foot but some could be made by public transport to limit the risks and fatigue of the journey. This is part of our field of investigation to offer a complete and satisfactory solution to these children. And a solid possibility to sponsor a child in Ethiopia to our donors of course!
An educational challenge
Together with the local authorities from the Ministry of Education, we're looking into the possibility of supervising boarding students, particularly in the first few months. A tutoring system could involve teachers from the Chirolaba secondary school, who are in the best position to support the Sona children. In return for this substantial and important effort, the Foundation could support the equipment of the school, for example its photovoltaic electrification. This complex project is still being defined and all this is still at the hypothesis stage.
Betting on the future
Basically, experience shows that the children of Simien, who have left to study, are those who are likely to return to their native country to settle there permanently after their studies. This is true of the teachers at the Sona school, most of whom are just passing through because they come from a large town and want to return. A child from Sona who becomes a teacher or doctor thanks to sponsorship is more likely to return to settle in Simien!
